Day 3: Busy dives and Christy’s birthday cake

We’ve been busy at the seafloor observing and sampling vent fluids and iron microbial mats. So busy that we’ll have to update you later. Just wanted to give you a picture of what we’re seeing. All that orange is microbial biomass and the Fe oxide (rust!) biominerals they make. All is mostly going well; we’re just getting a 2nd round of samples back up to the ship at 1:30am. Did I mention that this is a 24 hour operation? It’s hard to get much sleep.

Chief Scientist Craig Moyer had to miss his wife Christy’s birthday today. We all celebrated for her with this yummy chocolate-chocolate chip cake. Happy Birthday, Christy!

Happy Bday Christy crop
